From the Rocks to the Root: Your Sea Moss Guide
Healing Roots Series · Gut Health & Detox
By Lesa Marie
Sis, let's talk about the ocean for a minute.
Long before sea moss showed up on your feed in a mason jar smoothie, it was pulled from the rocks by hands that knew the tide better than they knew the clock. In the Caribbean, our people gathered gold sea moss from warm shallow waters. Across the Atlantic in Ireland, other hands gathered a deeper, purple version from the cold, rough coast. Two oceans. Two colors. One gift.
And if you're in the middle of your own shift right now — thyroid feeling off, energy dipping, joints a little stiffer, skin asking for something more — this is exactly the kind of root medicine our grandmothers reached for without needing a study to tell them it worked.
So let's break down gold versus purple, what the research actually says, and how to bring both into your healing, the RTR way.
What The Research Shows
Thyroid & Iodine Support
Both varieties are naturally rich in iodine, a mineral your thyroid depends on. — Strong evidence
Gut Lining & Digestion
The natural mucilage in sea moss has a long history of use for soothing the gut lining and easing digestion. — Promising evidence
Mineral Density
Sea moss carries a wide mineral profile — iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium. — Strong evidence
Antioxidant Support (Purple)
Purple sea moss gets its color from anthocyanins, the same antioxidant family found in blueberries. — Promising evidence
Skin & Collagen
Traditional topical use for dry or irritated skin; mineral content may support collagen. — Emerging evidence
Weight & Metabolism
Low calorie, high fiber; early research suggests support for fullness and metabolic balance. — Emerging evidence
Sea moss is not a trend — it is a homecoming.
Gold vs. Purple: What's The Difference?
Traditional Source — Gold: Caribbean (St. Lucia) · Purple: North Atlantic (Ireland)
Color Comes From — Gold: Beta-carotenoids · Purple: Anthocyanins
Standout Minerals — Gold: Calcium, zinc · Purple: Iodine, iron, magnesium, potassium
Flavor & Texture — Gold: Milder, easy to blend · Purple: Firmer, stronger ocean flavor
Best For — Gold: Beginners, everyday use · Purple: Mineral-dense, antioxidant boost
Why This Matters More In Midlife
As hormones shift in perimenopause and menopause, several systems ask for more support — and sea moss touches nearly all of them:
Thyroid resilience — iodine needs can be harder to meet through diet alone as hormones shift.
Bone strength — calcium, magnesium, and potassium support bone density that naturally declines after 40.
Skin & collagen — mineral-rich support as skin's own collagen production slows.
Gut & metabolism — a soothed gut lining supports metabolic changes many women notice in this season.
Energy — a broad mineral base gives the body more raw material when energy feels harder to come by.
The ocean has been feeding and healing our people since before we had words for medicine. Sea moss is not a trend — it is a homecoming. Ninety-two minerals from the sea, calling your body back to itself. — My Nana
How To Make Your Own Sea Moss Gel
Exact recipe — yields about 3 cups of gel
Where To Source It
RTR-Recommended: MAJU Wild Sea Moss, Raw Dried (Chondrus Crispus Whole Leaf) — wildcrafted from cold Atlantic/Canadian waters, never pool-grown, same sourcing standard as the gel and capsules we recommend elsewhere in this guide. Buying raw and making your own gel is also the most economical option.
What You'll Need
4 oz (113g) raw dried wildcrafted sea moss (gold, purple, or a 50/50 mix)
2 limes, juiced (for the cleaning rinse)
6 cups filtered water (for soaking)
1½ cups fresh filtered water (for blending)
A high-speed blender and a clean glass jar with lid
Rinse thoroughly. Rinse the 4 oz of dried sea moss under cool running water, working through the fronds by hand. Rinse until the water runs clear.
Lime cleanse. Squeeze the 2 limes over the moss, toss to coat, let sit 5 minutes, then rinse once more.
Soak. Cover completely with 6 cups filtered water. Soak at room temperature 12–24 hours until softened and roughly doubled in size.
Drain and rinse again. Discard the soaking water and rinse the swollen moss one final time.
Blend. Blend the soaked moss with 1½ cups fresh filtered water, 60–90 seconds, until completely smooth.
Set. Pour into a glass jar and refrigerate uncovered 30–60 minutes until it thickens into a firm gel.
Store. Seal and refrigerate up to 3 weeks, or freeze in ice cube trays up to 3 months.
Use daily. Start with 1 tsp daily the first week, then build to 1–2 tablespoons daily.
Prefer Capsules? That Works Too
If the soak-and-blend ritual isn't realistic for your season of life right now, sis, capsules are a completely valid way to get the same benefits.
Typical dose: 1,000–1,500 mg of sea moss extract or powder daily, taken with food
What to look for: wildcrafted sourcing, a third-party Certificate of Analysis for heavy metals, and a short, clean ingredient list
Best pick: a wildcrafted capsule sourced from St. Lucia or the Irish Atlantic
Good to know: capsules deliver less raw mucilage than fresh gel, but mineral and iodine content stays largely intact
RTR-Recommended Capsule
Maju Superfoods Wild Sea Moss Capsules — wildcrafted from St. Lucia, third-party heavy metal tested with a published Certificate of Analysis, USDA Organic. This is the “trinity” formula — sea moss, bladderwrack, and burdock root — for extra iodine support and gentle detox.
The RTR Combined Sea Moss Protocol
Gel and capsule, working together — each doing what it does best.
Morning — Gold Gel — 1 tbsp in smoothie/tea — Gentle gut-lining & digestive support
Midday, with lunch — Maju Trinity Capsule — 1 capsule — Concentrated iodine, gentle detox
Evening (optional) — Purple Gel — 1 tsp in warm tea — Antioxidants & magnesium for rest
4-Week Build-Up Schedule
Week 1 — Capsule only. 1 Maju Trinity capsule daily with lunch, to gauge tolerance.
Week 2 — Add the morning gel. Keep the capsule, add 1 tbsp gold gel in your morning smoothie or tea.
Week 3 — Add the evening gel. If your body's handling both well, add 1 tsp purple gel in the evening.
Week 4 and beyond — Settle into rhythm. Run the full protocol 5 days a week, rest 2 days.
What To Track
Energy levels through the afternoon slump
Digestion and regularity
Skin texture and hydration
Any cycle or hot-flash changes, if applicable
How you feel after your 2 rest days
Because both the gel and the capsule contain iodine, this protocol is not meant to be stacked with other iodine-heavy supplements (like bladderwrack alone or kelp) without your provider's guidance.
A Few Things To Know First
Sea moss is naturally high in iodine — if you have a thyroid condition (especially hyperthyroidism), talk with your doctor first.
Sea moss is a bioaccumulator and can absorb heavy metals from the water it grows in. Only buy from sources that publish third-party heavy metal testing.
Avoid pool-grown sea moss — it lacks the full mineral profile of wildcrafted, ocean-harvested moss.
Look for wildcrafted sourcing from clean waters — St. Lucia and the Irish Atlantic are respected origins.
Not recommended in high amounts during pregnancy without medical supervision.
This is food-based support, not a substitute for a full thyroid or hormone workup with your provider.
Your healing starts at the root.
